This edition, of the first three Duos, is based on a copy of Longman and Broderip’s 1788 edition which is preserved in the British Library. The title page reads: ‘ Six / DUOS / Pour le / VIOLON et VIOLONCELLE / Composés par / Ignace Pleyel / Op.12 Pr.7/6 / Enter’d at Stationers Hall / LONDON / Printed by Longman and Broderip No 26 Cheapside and No 13 Hay Market / Musical Instrument Makers and Music Sellers to His Royal Highness / the Prince ofWales, Where may be had all the above Authors works’.
The parts generally give the appearance of having been accurately engraved although there is the usual rash of common errors and inconsistencies. The notation of articulation and dynamic markings has been standardised
throughout, and, where missing, markings have been
reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the print is inconsistent at times in its notation of appoggiature ; these have also been standardised to minimise confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been silently corrected; otherwise, any editorial emendation with no authority from the source is placed within brackets.
