Details

In the absence of the autograph score the present edition is based on the sole printed edition of the work that was issued in Leipzig in 1832 by Breitkopf und Hrtel. The title page reads: INTRODUCTION / et / Variations brillantes / pour le Pianoforte / avec Accompagnement de l'Orchestre / composes et ddies / Demoiselle Emmelione Bddinghaus / par / FERD. RIES. / ...Oeuvre. 170 ... Leipsic... / chez Breitkopf & Hrtel. This source presents few major problems to the editor although there are numerous minor inconsistencies in the placement of dynamic markings and inconsistently applied articulations which benefit from careful editorial intervention. These are indicated in this edition by the use of brackets and dotted slurs. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment. Ries's pedal markings have been left as they appear in the original. Allan Badley
