Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the son of a French planter in Guadeloupe and a slave of Senegalese origin, was a violinist, composer, soldier and fencer.

Saint-Georges lived an extraordinary life, enjoying success both as a swordsman and as a musician, but his brief military career during the French Revolution ended with his imprisonment for “unrevolutionary behaviour”.

Like the music of many composers of his time, Saint-Georges’s works fell into obscurity but the man himself was not forgotten. With his extraordinary range of talents, exotic persona and breadth of creative expression, he came to be regarded as an archetypal romantic hero.
